Choosing a great electric knife for fish isn’t as simple as going to the store and buying the first electric knife you see.

Since fish is a relatively delicate food and flakes apart easily while you cut it, it’s incredibly important to get the right kind of knife and the right blade. 

There are some exceptions of course. If you’re going to primarily be working with tougher fish like salmon, then you probably don’t need a knife that’s specialized for delicate meat because salmon fish is a lot firmer and less likely to flake than other kinds of fish. 

But if you’re going to be working with lake-caught trout, orange roughy, tilapia, and other common kinds of fish, you need a knife designed for that specific job.  

Blade Type

The type of blade you’re working with is one of the most important details. It’s possible to fillet fish with a rounded tip electric bread knife, but it’s not ideal and you’ll probably struggle to get even fillets. 

Instead of using a blade that isn’t really designed for fish, look for knives that come with fillet blades, or have fillet blades as an accessory option. 

Fillet blades for electric knives usually have more aggressive (pointier) teeth than other kinds of fillet knives. But, they are still thin, relatively flexible, and have a sharp pointed tip. 

Some electric knives don’t have a blade that’s called a fillet knife, but still meets all those criteria. That’s still a good option, even though the blade is likely to be a little thicker than a true fillet knife.

The handle is a little larger than a typical knife, with an ergonomic grip that’s easy to hold and easy to use.

The safety lock on this electric knife is also a handy feature to have. It helps prevent accidental cuts and accidents in the kitchen, and I love that it works particularly well for people with hand and arm disabilities.
