Top 5 Best Blenders for Frozen Margaritas (2021 Review)

Frozen margaritas can be a fun treat for birthdays or parties or just something you enjoy in the evening after work or over a relaxed weekend.

There are so many restaurants that are famous for their frozen margaritas even. That’s how popular there are.

I have to wonder why restaurants get all the fame though.

With the right equipment, frozen margaritas are easy to make at home.

Plus, when you make your margaritas yourself you don’t have to worry about bartenders that add too much lime, don’t add enough tequila, or reach for the cheapest bottle on the shelf to prepare your mixed drink.

At home — you get total control of the ingredients, flavors, and ratios so you can enjoy a perfect margarita every time.

Plus, knowing how to make a great margarita is a great way to ensure your house is the group favorite for family get togethers and dinner parties with friends!

My Overall Top #1 Pick: Vitamix Explorian Blender, Professional-Grade

It shouldn’t be a surprise that I’m including a Vitamix blender on this list. Vitamix blenders are known to be incredibly strong ice-crushers, and also just offer some of the best motor performance in the genre.

If it’s good enough for Starbuck to make a great frappe, it’s good enough for you to make a great frozen margarita.

I also appreciate that Vitamix blenders, and this model in particular, offer large jars. The larger jar size lets you make several margaritas at once, or even supply a whole party with frosty drinks.

This design is also particularly durable and easy to use, which is why I’ve chosen this model over some other Vitamix models.

The Explorian is also a bit more of a budget friendly model from Vitamix. It’s still in the price range you would expect for a premium blender, but still more accessible than many.

This blender is also incredibly easy to use. If you’ve used a countertop blender before you will be able to use the Explorian.

Vitamix’s Explorian is my top pick because this is a relatively affordable, long-lasting, large blender with the power you need to make frozen margaritas. It’s a great choice for traditional margarita recipes, but it’s got enough space and power for you to throw in other ingredients like frozen fruits.

What are the Advantages of a High-Quality Blender for Frozen Margaritas?

Frozen margaritas aren’t terribly difficult to make so it can be easy to think that cheaper blenders are up to the job.

Unfortunately, using a blender that isn’t designed to handle a lot of stress with a relatively powerful motor is a recipe for burning out your blender too quickly.

Frozen margaritas are actually a relatively high-stress beverage to make. The more ice and the thicker you want your margarita to be the more stress you’re putting on your blender overall.

Having a high quality blender that’s designed to handle those stresses will last a lot longer.

High quality blenders will also be able to make more in a batch, so you can make drinks for more than one person at a time. Even if you’re only making margaritas for yourself not entertaining, it’s easier to make more than a single drink at a time.

Since high quality blenders are also more powerful, they tend to be able to power through your margarita ingredients faster. Saving time may not seem like a huge advantage, but it can add up quickly.

Not sure how to make a frozen margarita in the first place? I’ve got you covered, this short video gives you an intro to making great frozen margaritas with three different recipes to get you started.

How to Pick the Best Blender for Frozen Margaritas?

What Size Jar Do I Need?

When it comes to making frozen margaritas I recommend going large. That’s not just because large jars are good for guests and entertaining. Larger blender jars also make it a lot easier to get a more consistent texture in your frozen margarita.

That’s because ice has more room to move and cycle in a larger jar, which tends to cut down on large pieces of ice in your blender jar.

In general I recommend looking for a blender jar at least 60oz or bigger.

That size gives you a lot of range, it lets you make frozen margaritas for a group instead of just a single drink at a time.

However, there are exceptions to every rule and I do think that a smaller blender may be a good idea if you’re only going to be making a drink for one most of the time.

Motor Strength

Motor strength varies a lot between different blenders. Household motors are usually about 500-750 watts, and motors 600 watts and up are usually a good choice for frozen margaritas. that’s because it takes a lot of power to crush frozen things.

Even plain ice is relatively difficult to crush and takes a lot of power.

You probably don’t need a 1,500 watt professional quality motor (unless you want one) but 600-900 watts is probably the sweet spot for powerful but affordable motors.

Sound Dampening

Sound dampening pretty much only comes of premium blender models, but it’s usually well worth having. Sound dampening is critical for making frozen margaritas because crushing ice is loud.

If you can afford to get a blender with some sound dampening, it’s probably a good idea to go ahead and pay the extra money to get it. The noise of a blender can be one of the biggest reasons people don’t use them. sound dampening can be one of the biggest features that makes your blender easier to use.

Blade Design

When it comes to crushing frozen ice, sharp blades aren’t necessarily a huge advantage like they can be for processing other kinds of food. That’s because a very sharp blade is a lot more likely to dull or chip, and won’t have any better impact on the ice than a dull blade.

While some blenders talk about their sharp blades as a benefit, that’s more helpful when you’re dealing with fresh produce and softer foods, not ice and frozen fruits. Look for ice blades, crushing blades, and other duller blade designs if you’re looking for the best blenders for frozen margaritas.

My Reviews of the Best Blenders for Frozen Margaritas

1. Vitamix Explorian Blender, Professional-Grade

I’ve already talked a little about the Explorian, but let’s dig into more of the details about this blender.

One of the first things you’ll notice about this blender is the tall lid with the squared off spout at the top.

The shape of that spout is actually really important for frozen drinks like frozen margaritas because it helps give you more directional control when you’re pouring.

You don’t want to ruin your salt rims when you’re pouring, right?

The square design helps prevent accidental spillover and keeps your beverage inside the salt ring.

Variable speed control is also incredibly useful making frozen margaritas. You can start on a higher power for more crushing ability, and then reduce the speed to help lower the noise and process your margarita more easily.

Between those features and Vitamix’s reputation for offering high-quality and high powered motors along with strong jars, this blender was a natural top pick.

PROS (+)CONS (-)
+ Powerful motor
+ Variable speed control
+ Easy pour spout
+ Durable design
– Tall profile may not fit under all cabinets

2. Margaritaville Tahiti Frozen Concoction Maker

For my high end pick I wanted to include something that’s more of a specialized blender than a lot of the others I recommend.

This is still a blender, but you won’t want to use it for soups and other blending. It’s good for frozen beverages and even smoothies, but not hot liquids.

This frozen margarita maker is also a little too specialized for general blending of all liquids. It’s designed to crush ice or frozen fruit, and that’s what it’s good at.

This machine is great if you’re looking for something in addition to your blender for frozen drinks.

Maybe you have a downstairs bar and want a dedicated drink maker, or just love frozen beverages and it’s worth paying to have a better-designed machine to handle the stress.

This maker comes complete with three handled classes to make it easier to drink your beverage after it’s done.

This system also has more settings than a typical blender, giving you more control over whether it’s shaving off ice to thicken your drink or just blending everything together.

All in all, while more specialized, I still think this is one of the absolute best blenders for a frozen margarita.

PROS (+)CONS (-)
+ Lots of beverage-specific controls
+ Comes with its own mugs
+ Easy to use
+ Attractive design
– Expensive design
– Doesn’t work as a standard blender

3. NutriBullet ZNBF30400Z Blender 1200 Watts

This blender is a little bit simpler than either of the other blenders I’ve already discussed.

However, despite the more affordable design and simpler set of features, the NutriBullet 1200 watt blender has a lot of the core features I look for in a blender for frozen margaritas.

It’s got a squared off pour spout, a very powerful 1,200 watt motor, and a low crushing blade design instead of taller shaper blades.

This system is mostly limited in its speed options and lack of pre-programmed settings.

Instead of having variable speed, it has three speed settings and a pulse button.

Overall that makes this blender incredibly easy to use. The blades handle chopping through ice and frozen fruit well assuming there is enough liquid in the blender. Since the motor is one of the more powerful options, it’s also likely to last longer than most affordable blenders.

If you’re looking for a more affordable model, this is a great choice.

PROS (+)CONS (-)
+ Very powerful motor
+ Simple operation
+ Easy pour spout
+ Durable overall design
– Designed to run in short bursts, no continuous blending

4. Ninja Professional 72 Oz Countertop Blender with 1000-Watt Base and Total Crushing Technology

For another affordable but working blender, the Ninja Professional 72 ox blender is a great option.

It’s designed to make a large batch of liquids and beverages and soups, which means it’s well designed for mixing frozen beverages for adults and children (no shame in enjoying a virgin margarita or two yourself, either!)

Like the NutriBullet, this blender has three speed settings + pulse. That’s plenty for blending margaritas, but does mean you have less control over the blending process.

More importantly, this blender’s motor is slightly less powerful than the NutriBullet, but it’s blade design is more efficient.

However, the blades are designed to be sharp rather than crushing blades, and the pour spout doesn’t give you as much control. It’s those detailed that made me rate this blender a little below the NutriBullet design for frozen margaritas.

PROS (+)CONS (-)
+ Taller blade mixes beverages more easily
+ Easy to control
+ Easy to clean
+ Durable overall design
– Blades arent designed for crushing
– Design isn’t as pouring-friendly

5. Margaritaville Key West Frozen Concoction Maker

For the last option I wanted to include a slightly more affordable specialty drink maker.

This blender drink maker combination is still a very specialized version, but it’s also a little more affordable than the first drink maker I listed.

Of course, it’s still a relatively expensive appliance at the end of the day.

The extra-large ice reservoir is designed to let you make up to 2 pitchers worth of your favorite drink before you have to refill the ice.

It also gives you the option to just mix and serve or to shave ice off to add to the drink as you go. The design is straightforward, but it’s easy to work with and efficient enough to make drinks quickly.

PROS (+)CONS (-)
+ Easy to use controls
+ Large ice reservoir
+ Attractive design
+ Relatively affordable
+ 4 pre-programmed drink type settings
– Ice shaving mechanism occasionally jams

My Top Pick: Vitamix Explorian Blender, Professional-Grade

While this blender may not be a specialized drink making machine, it’s still a great option for blending frozen margaritas. I appreciate that this blender works for a wide variety of different applications as well, since it means that you’ll get more out of your money with this blender.

Its durable design, power, and the great reputation behind Vitamix as a brand all make this blender an excellent choice, and easily my top pick.
