Top 5 Best Mixer Grinders for Indian Cooking (2021 Review)

A lot of home cooks in the United States make do with a blender and a food processor for their Indian cooking.

There’s a problem with that.

Neither blenders or food processors are really designed to make authentic Indian foods. You’re a lot more limited in what you can do if that’s all you’re working with.

Sure, you might be able to make a decent curry at home with a blender and a food processor.

But imagine being able to make your own curry pastes, dosa batter, grinding custom masala spice blends, and homemade chutneys?

The best mixer grinders can handle the range of Indian cooking — both wet and dry ingredients which means you can do everything from preparing Indian flours that can’t be bought in most U.S. grocery stores, to preparing authentic Indian drinks and juices.

If you’re looking for a way to up your Indian cooking game, investing in a great mixer grinder is a good way to go. You might also want to look into getting a set of great cookware for Indian cooking too. Great cookware can take your cooking to the next level.

In this guide you’ll learn:

  • How to choose a great mixer grinder
  • Why you need a mixer grinder for many authentic Indian recipes
  • And much more!

My Overall Top #1 Pick: Preethi Eco Twin Jar Mixer Grinder, 550-Watt

The Preethi Eco Twin Jar Mixer Grinder is easily one of the best mider grinders for Indian food that you can get in the United States.

A lot of mixer grinder options are only available in other countries, so it’s nice to see an option that’s been designed specifically for Indian food in the United States market.

This international design uses the best features of several of Preethi’s mixer grinders to make more authentic cooking available to the international market.

This system gives you both a small and larger jar, which I love since I like to grind larger batches of ingredients when I’m entertaining.

The smaller container is a good option for making custom spice mixes and for grinding small batches of ingredients. That’s nice for recipes that need a teaspoon or two of fresh spices or lentil flour when you don’t want to make cups of ground ingredients.

What are the Advantages of a High Quality Grinder Mixer for Indian Cooking?

Grinder mixers are a little different than blenders or food processors, which are the two more common appliances in the United States. A grinder mixer is somewhere between a coffee grinder and a blender. If you want to learn a little more, I’ve found this guide to the differences between blenders, mixer grinders, and juicers.

Like coffee grinders, grinders are designed to break down dried grain and hard ingredients like spices into a powered form. They’ll also mix the resulting powder if you’re working with multiple ingredients in the same flour or mix.

Of course, mixer grinders are a highly specialized tool, so I’ve also put together a list of the best blenders for Indian food if you’re looking for something a little more versatile and familiar. If you’re looking to create the most authentic possible Indian dishes though, you’ll need one of the best mixer grinders for Indian food.

Mixer grinders are great for creating your own custom curry, garam masala, and other iconic Indian, Tibetan, and Nepalese spice mixes. I love being able to add a little extra cinnamon and corriander to my favorite blends.

Plus fresh spices taste so much better than store-bought!

Fresher spices have more health benefits too! It just so happens that 5 spices with proven health benefits are all common in Indian cooking.

Being able to make flours from traditional ingredients like garbanzo beans and lentils also gives you a lot more versatility when it comes to Indian cooking. Things like dosa batter can’t be made without those specialty ingredients, and plenty of other meals require specialty flours.

You could spend a fortune at a specialty grocery store to get the ingredients you need, or you could save money by grinding and preparing your own ingredients.

Not sure how to use the best mixer grinders for Indian food?

Here’s a video with some inspiration for how you can use these versatile appliances, using a slightly more advanced Preethi mixer grinder (unfortunately not one available in the United States).

How to Pick the Best Mixer Grinder for Indian Cooking?

Finding a good mixer grinder usually isn’t a challenge, but it’s important to make sure you’re looking at all the details of your mixer grinder to make sure you’re getting a good one. There are a lot of low-quality mixer grinders sold in the United States because fewer people use them, so most people don’t know what to look for.

Motors:

For a good mixer grinder, you should look for at least a 500-watt motor. That’s because even grinding relatively soft ingredients takes a lot of power and torque. You need a motor that can handle the consistent power demands of making flour or spice mixes.

That way you have the power when you need it. A powerful motor can also make mixing batters and other wet mixing a lot faster and easier.

Blade Material:

It’s important to make sure your mixer grinder has a stainless steel blade. The blades for a mixer grinder doesn’t have to be particularly sharp, but it does need to be durable enough to power through dried ingredients and turn things like dried beans into flour.

Even spices can be difficult to grind. A lot of spices are made from seeds or bark, which are naturally hard ingredients to work with.

Stainless steel blades are stronger and more durable, which means they are less likely to break while you’re grinding. Stainless steel also handles heat better than many metals, and much better than plastic, which is important since grinders can heat up while they work.

Size:

Mixer grinder jars tend to be smaller than blender jars. There just aren’t too many situations where you’d need that much space in your mixer grinder outside of commercial kitchens. But, even though you won’t necessarily need a jar as big as a blender, it’s nice to have different size options to choose between.

I like mixer grinders with two different jar sizes, one small and one large, so that I can match the jar to whatever I’m grinding. Small jars for spices, and large jars for making flour, mixing batter, or preparing wet-mixes for recipes.

Design:

Generally I don’t think that the design of my appliances, including mixer grinders for Indian food, matters as much as the functionality of the appliance. But, I did think it was worth talking about the design of these appliances in one respect– height.

Mixer grinder appliances can be fairly tall to make enough room underneath the jar for the motor and other mechanisms. That’s a good thing in terms of power and efficient design, but can make it relatively difficult to fit your mixer grinder under your cupboards.

If you don’t have a lot of tall storage space you may want to look for a shorter mixer grinder or just grinder appliance that will still fit on your counters.

It’s also incredibly important to think about design when you’re cleaning your mixer grinder. You don’t want to miss any corners or places where bacteria can hide. A mixer grinder might not be a blender, but the same cleaning process applies here’s my guide to cleaning blenders (or mixer grinders)!

My Reviews of the Best Mixer Grinder for Indian Cooking

1. Preethi Eco Twin Jar Mixer Grinder, 550-Watt (Our Top Pick)

Product Features:

  • 3 Stainless Steel Jars
  • 550 Watt Motor
  • 18 Inches Total Height
  • 3 Speed Options
  • Plastic Base
  • Not Dishwasher Safe

This mixer grinder is a relatively powerful option with a 550-watt motor that works to create evenly ground flour and spices without being too powerful for other kinds of mixing.

It also doesn’t heat up very quickly, which makes this model a good option for extended grinding.

I also appreciate that this design comes with two different jars.

The smallest jar, the 0.5 liter chutney jar is perfect for mixing chutneys (big surprise) but it’s also a good option for spice mixes and recipes that only call for a tablespoon or two of flour.

The larger 1 liter jar is a good option for making flours, drink mixes, and anything you need to prepare in bulk before you get cooking.

I’d also like to note that it’s relatively common for Preethi mixer grinders to come with some scratches or scuff marks on the plastic and the stainless steel blades. Those are usually just from manufacturing, and the mixer grinder should work fine even if it does have a few marks on it when it arrives.

PROS (+)CONS (-)
+ Designed specifically for Indian cooking needs
+ Durable grinder blade is great for making flours or grinding spices
+ Comes with two jars, perfect for making more complicated sauces
+ Powerful 550-watt motor can handle heavy loads from Indian cooking.
– Product may be scuffed on arrival
– Loud operation

2. Premier Super G Kitchen Machine Mixer Grinder (Best High-End Pick)

Product Features:

  • 3 Stainless Steel Jars
  • Ergonomic Handle Design
  • 550 Watt Motor
  • Reset Switch at the Bottom of the Unit
  • Non-Locking Jar Lids
  • 14 Inches Total Height
  • Not Dishwasher Safe

The Premier Super G mixer grinder is another great option, and comes with an additional jar size for users who really love making their own flours and spices.

The design is overall very similar to the Preethi Eco mixer grinder– it’s got the same tall design and similar jar shapes and sizes.

However, this model is a little harder wearing and likely to last longer. It’s a good option for people who like to make a lot of Indian food and are likely to use their mixer grinder frequently. It’s also a little larger than the Preethi mixer grinder, making it a solid option for larger families.

I also appreciate that this is a wet and dry grinder. That means I can use wet ingredients without having to worry about frying the motor or causing other internal damage.

One thing I would have liked to see would be locking lids on the top of the jar. While that isn’t necessarily a standard feature on mixer grinders the way it’s standard on blenders, it still would make this machine a little easier to use.

Still, it’s a good option all round, and a little more durable than the Preethi Eco Twin mixer grinder.

PROS (+)CONS (-)
+ Wet / Dry grinder perfect for dosa batter and other wet mixtures
+ Comes with 3 different jars, perfect for preparing several dishes at once
+ Stainless steel jars and blade resists flavor contamination from acids and spices
+ Rubber feet for more stable use
– Not Dishwasher safe, you must hand wash all components

3. Tabakh Prime Indian Mixer Grinder (Most Powerful)

Product Features:

  • 2 Stainless Steel Jars (.4L, and 1.5L)
  • 2 Grinding Speeds
  • 600 Watt Motor
  • 12 Month Warranty
  • 8.5 Lbs.

This more affordable design is a good option for cooks who are mostly looking to be able to grind a small amount of fresh spices or making chutney.

This design does come with one larger jar, but it’s still less versatile overall compared with the previous two models we’ve discussed.

However, this spice grinder will let you unlock the freshest possible flavor from your spices. That said, the motor on this mixer grinder is the most powerful on my list so far, 600-watts.

The more powerful motor should be relatively effective for larger grinding, but it does tend to heat up a little more which means you’ll need to either grind large batches quickly, or take breaks.

More powerful grinders work faster and tend to be a little more consistent than less powerful versions.

That means more evenly ground spices and fewer large peices that can taste bad or even damage your teeth while you’re eating.

This system is also incredibly easy to use thanks to a simple speed dial design. So, while it might not offer the large cup sizes I prefer, it’s still a reasonably good optional overall.

PROS (+)CONS (-)
+ 600 Watt motor, perfect for grinding lots of spices at once
+ 12-month warranty
+ Vacuum rubber boots for extreme stability, no more spills
+ 2 jars, perfect for preparing 2 different spice mixtures at once
– Can heat up quickly, changing the flavor of spices
-Not suitable for sauces or batter preparation because of it’s small size.

4. DEIK Personal Smoothie Blender Mixer (Best For Portion Control)

Product Features:

  • 4 Jar Blender
  • Food Processor Unit Available
  • Small Grinder Jar
  • Watertight Lids
  • 500 Watt Motor
  • Heat Protection Included

This blender mixer grinder combo is a slightly different design than most mixer grinders. It’s really a hybrid appliance for people who want to have both but don’t have room for them.

This design works as a blender or a mixer grinder depending on which jar and blade attachment you use.

However, the grinding jar is relatively small, so it’s not a great option if you’re planning to make flours with your mixer grinder.

I like that this is an easy to use hybrid design, and incredibly affordable. However, of all the mixer grinders on this list, it’s probably the most limited for Indian food. Still a good option, but not as powerful as the more specialized mixer grinders.

The wide range of jar sizes with this blender food-processor combo gives you a lot more power to control grinding portions. That’s great for when you only need a small amount of a spice or flour, and just as good for processing larger batches of dosa batter and other more bulky meals.

PROS (+)CONS (-)
+ Easy to use, familiar for blender users
+ Also works as a blender/food processor
+ Versatile design works for a wide range of regional Indian cuisine
+ Easy to store and clean
– Not great for making flours or doughs

5. Prestige Manttra Teon Star Mixer Grinder (Best For Large Families)

Product Features:

  • 2 Locking Watertight Lids
  • 3 Stainless Steel Jars
  • 5 High Efficiency Stainless Steel Blades
  • Die cast handles for better grip
  • Jars are Stackable

This design is another good option if you’re looking for a mixer grinder that’s designed to handle Indian food as well as a variety of rarer ingredients for ethnic cooking.

The three different sizes of grinder jar are perfect for working with all the most common ingredients for Indian cooking. The smallest jar is a good size for grinding fresh spice blends, while the larger two are a good size for dosa batters and even sauces. The larger designs are great if you want to make a family meal with 2 or more sauces!

This model also features a secure lid locking system so you don’t have to hold the jar while you grind.

The base is also relatively stable in operation, so there’s no need to hold the blender while you work. That’s great if you’re trying to mix or grind ingredients while also cooking another dish. I know going hands-free is useful for me when I’m trying to grind spices for a curry while also taking care of my favorite samosa filling on the stove.

Die cast handles also make transitioning between jars a little easier. The handles all feel the same, and offer a secure grip that makes it easy to avoid spilling.

Overall, this is a solid option, it’s just not quite as efficient as the Preethi mixer grinder or as powerful as the Premier Super G mixer grinder. Even so, the slightly different jar sizes and other differences make this grinder a good option!

PROS (+)CONS (-)
+ Interchangeable Lids help reduce storage requirements
+ Polycarbonate lids are harder to break, great for families with kids
+ Liquid proof seals make this an effective set for batters, doughs, and even making flavored oils and sauces
+ Water draining outlet makes cleaning and maintenance much easier
– Exposed screw heads inside the jar make it a little harder to clean
– Need to be careful to fully attach both jars and lids for best performance

My Top Pick: Preethi Eco Twin Jar Mixer Grinder, 550-Watt

While there are a lot of good options out there when it comes to effective mixer grinders, the Preethi Eco Twin Jar Mixer Grinder is still the best option for making Indian food. Not only is it durable and well designed, it’s also meant specifically for the most common ingredients in Indian food.

This blender will last longer and generally work better for Indian food than most other grinder mixers available in the United States.

Final Thoughts On The Best Mixer Grinder for Indian Cooking

Indian cooking is a real joy. Seeing how all of the spices and ingredients come together to create complex layered flavors and delicious meals is always an adventure. Using a mixer grinder can really take all your Indian cooking to the next level by making it possible to fresher spices and a wider range of ingredients in your recipes.

Mixer grinders are also excellent for Middle Eastern cooking, which makes them a fantastic option for making hummus. Of course, blenders are also a good option for hummus, depending on which appliance you’re most comfortable with.

Now that you know which mixer grinders will work best for your favorite cooking, there’s just one thing left.

Happy cooking!
